Overview

The Program for Society and the Environment creates a home at the University of Maryland, College Park, for research on the relationship between society and the natural environment. The cornerstone of our philosophy is our dedication to collaboration among the social sciences in order to understand this relationship. We create a hub for social scientists who study all aspects of the society-environment connection, as well as a training ground for graduate students who are interested in these issues. Our program brings together UMd faculty and graduate student scholars from such fields as Sociology, Public Policy, Government and Politics, and Geography, to produce socially vital and politically relevant research on society and the environment. We also partner with experts from outside of the university community, including policymakers, governmental officers, and natural scientists, both in the United States and abroad.
